Wayne sat squirming in his chair as Susan gave her report to the parents and students at the Roosevelt School Dad's Night Open House. The assignment was to introduce your dad and tell something about him.
Susan's Dad was a fire chief. She told how her Dad had climbed up the outside of a burning building to rescue a small boy and his dog.
Before Susan, Joe had introduced his Dad, a veterinarian. He told how he doctored cats, dogs, horses, birds and even bunnies!
And before that, Nancy had told how her Dad, an emergency paramedic, was let down the side of a cliff on a long rope and rescued a small girl and her cat.
What could Wayne say? He thought and thought. His turn was next.
Mrs. Cook, Wayne's teacher, came forward as the audience applauded after Joe finished introducing his Dad.
"That was very good, Joe," she said. "Thank you. Now Wayne Rylie will introduce his Father."
Wayne walked slowly up to the microphone.
"Ladies and Gentlemen," he began. "I would like to introduce you to my Dad, Wayne Walter Rylie the Third."
"My Dad..." he stammered, "is a..."
"My Dad is a top secret agent for the United States Government. He is sent on top secret missions to save the world."
"Why, just last week, he was sent on a top secret mission to rescue the President of the United States. Terrorists kidnapped the President, tied him up, and put him in a large cargo plane on its way to a foreign country.
"Dad strapped on several top secret devices -- one designed to look like an ordinary wrist watch, another to look like an ordinary belt, and a pair of special shoes designed to look like Nikesİ."
"He pressed the top right button on the watch, activating the Nikeİ lookalikes to release all gravity and eject turbo boosters to fly him through the air. An electromagnetic cloaking device was activated to make him virtually invisible and inhibit radar tracking.
"Dad flew closer and closer to the cargo plane. He attached himself to the side of the plane with special magnets which were released by pressing the lower right button on his top secret watch.
"He pressed the lower left button and a heavy-duty power drill ejected from the tip of his right shoe, allowing him to cut clean through the sheet metal. Dad then entered the plane cautiously.
"He quietly snuck toward the front of the plane, where he found the President tied up and surrounded by terrorist guards. He pressed the top left button on his watch which shot sleeping darts into the arms of the guards.
"Dad untied the President and they both jumped from the cargo plane. By this time they were over the ocean, so Dad pressed a button on his belt which ejected parachutes so they could gently float down to the water.
"Dad pressed another button on his belt and two breathing apparatuses came out. They put these to their mouths and Dad pressed the turbo booster button again which boosted them quickly through the water to shore.
"There, a group of top secret agents were waiting to take the President back to Washington, D.C."
Wayne stopped. He looked around the room. He saw looks of shock and disbelief on each face. Mrs. Cook gasped.
"Well...uh..." Wayne gulped, "my Dad is really an author. He writes action-adventure novels. When I grow up, I want to be a writer just like him."
Now everyone smiled and chuckled.
"Well...," said Mrs. Cook as she breathed a sigh of relief, "he certainly has the imagination for it, doesn't he? Let's give Wayne a round of applause."
As Wayne and his Dad left the school, Wayne looked up at his Father, "How did I do, Dad?"
"You did just fine," Wayne Walter Rylie the Third said as he gently squeezed his son's hand.
He then swung his son up on his back, pressed the top right button on his watch...
...and the two flew home.
